Aimee’s Story

Aimee from Tyldesley has been under the care of the children’s hospital since she was two-years-old, mum Karen tells us their story…

"Since Aimee was two she has been receiving treatment for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia at the children’s hospital.

As soon as she was diagnosed she received blood transfusions as her haemoglobin and platelets levels were very low and she was very weak. Aimee initially stayed in hospital for fourteen weeks; having CT, MRI and ultrasound scans as well as starting her first course of chemotherapy.

Aimee did come home for Christmas but she was admitted again as she had started shaking and had developed a slump in one side of her body. The past four and half years have been a rollercoaster ride of emotions as Aimee went through good and bad spells, seeing her in and out of hospital.

Our last course of chemotherapy was at the end of 2007 and Aimee is doing really well, she has started school and is making friends and socialising more as her immune system isn’t as weak as it was – which is a relief.

As a family we are still adjusting to post leukaemia life – both the girls (Aimee has a sister called Charlotte) have been brilliant throughout having just got on with it. One thing that I do like now is that Aimee has a new found energy as she tries to run round, just like a normal eight year old, after seeing her being bed bound and tired from treatment.

I don’t think you fully understand and appreciate how having a child in hospital affects your life until you have been through it yourself. Even now it still suddenly hit me that for the next five to ten years check ups and hospital visits are always going to be part of our life."
